Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

How free trade impacts nutrition (Washington Post)

IFPRI senior research fellow Joe Glauber was quoted in a story from the Washington Post about the connection between trade and nutrition. The article looks at how trade agreements, most notably NAFTA, have impacted the production and consumption of processed unhealthy foods, such as high-fructose corn syrup. Dr. Glauber argues that direct investment and advertising in promoting unhealthy foods are more of a concern than the liberalization of trade policies.
