Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Polluting Happiness (The News)

Pakistan’s The News published a feature on rising air pollution in Lahore, referring to Xiaobo Zhang’s latest research “Happiness in the Air: How a Dirty Sky Affects Mental Health and Subjective Well-being”. The article quoted Zhang who explained how lower air visibility, reduces shorter-term happiness and raised the rate of depressive symptoms. “This reduction in happiness was more pronounced with people concerned with environmental problems, who worked outdoors, earned lower incomes, or had young children,” said Zhang.
