Revision of subsidies can boost agriculture and the environment at the same time (EFE Agro)

February 07, 2022

EFE Agro published an article stating that the revision of agricultural subsidies, if done correctly, can boost the primary sector and care for the environment at the same time, according to a new report from the World Bank and IFPRI. The two organizations agree that much of the current government aid promotes “unsustainable” patterns of production and consumption, in a scenario in which agriculture and land use change are responsible for 22 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. greenhouse effect. IFPRI and the World Bank call for better adoption of what they call “green innovations” that help mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce costs, while boosting the economy and protecting the planet. One of the main authors of the study, Senior research fellow, Will Martin, tells Efe Agro that two beneficial practices that deserve to be encouraged are additives in animal feed and the alternation of flooding and drying in rice fields. “There has been limited investment in such innovations to date and there is every reason to anticipate that their potential is huge,” says Martin.
