Samuel Benin

Samuel Benin is the Acting Director for Africa in the Development Strategies and Governance Unit. He conducts research on national strategies and public investment for accelerating food systems transformation in Africa and provides analytical support to the African Union’s CAADP Biennial Review.

Rajalakshmi Nirmal

Senior Program Manager

Bio

Rajalakshmi Nirmal is a Senior Program Manager in the Markets, Trade, and Institutions Unit and manages the Rethinking Food Markets initiative. She is an agricultural policy expert with over 13 years of experience in research, writing, and communications. She has written extensively on agriculture and rural development issues and carried out media campaigns to change federal government policies. Most recently, she worked for the World Bank, helping in policy dialogues to support the transformation to sustainable agriculture. In 2021, she published a discussion paper in collaboration with IFPRI on implementation gaps in crop insurance in India. She won the Shriram Award for Excellence in Financial Journalism in 2018. An Indian national, she holds a master’s of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University and an MBA from the University of Madras.
